Cool To Be Vegan
August 08 2008
More and more people are turning vegan, and the membership of the Vegan Society is increasing rapidly.
There are many reasons for this lifestyle choice. Some people just don’t like the idea of eating living creatures, some people wonder if the fact that it takes 900 litres of water to produce one litre of milk may be a concern when many people are starved of water. Deforestation to provide grazing land may also be a concern as it contributes to global warming.
For people used to a ‘meat and two veggies’ way of life, it can be confusing and worrying to change. We have been taught that most of our protein, iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and calcium come from animal products and we worry that we may be deficient in important minerals and proteins if we become vegetarian, with many more people wondering if they could sustain themselves at all if they become vegan.
So here is the reassuring bit!! Zinc and iron are found in whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes like beans, and there is no reason why vegans should become anaemic. Proteins are also found in most plant foods.
Calcium is found in broccoli, spring greens, kale (and soya milk, but be careful of taking this if you have an under-active thyroid – see article on the menopause by Rita Carmichael on SUSU Organic). I took my son off dairy produce (after discussion with the Health Visitor) when he was a toddler. He is now six feet two and has the best teeth the dentist has ever seen!
I am not a vegan, or vegetarian, but am feeling more and more inclined to follow that route, for various reasons. My son and new daughter have recently decided to become vegans and they are feeling very energised and healthy so that is good news!
Vegan food is actually really easy, and if you eat raw food (beansprouts, carrots, salads etc) it may also have benefits. I love oat cakes with houmous – really filling and delicious! My eldest son has houmous on delicious bread with sundried tomatoes roasted red peppers and salad. Mmmmm
