Can Your Carbon Footprint Save You Money?
July 16 2007
How can my carbon footprint save me money?
First of all, what is a carbon footprint?
Basically it is a measure of the impact we have on the environment, and is measured in the amount of greenhouse gas (CO2) each activity produces.
Apparently the activities of the average person in the UK (travel, energy used in the home, buying food that has travelled a long way, clothing (especially that isn’t organic)…..you get the message) contributes around 11 tonnes of CO2 per year into the atmosphere.
We are all being asked to reduce our footprint, but the good news is that, as a sideline, that will save us money! Interested?
So how do we save money? ‘Save money’ (no real need to say that again, I just like the sound of it!) What the heck…..‘Save money’. I am sure that I am not alone in finding life quite expensive. Food (healthy food) can cost a fortune at the supermarket, and so I am happy to find any way to save. The following hints and tips should help - if you have any ideas please let us know.
ONE
First of all check out your footprint at the World Wildlife Fund footprint calculator
TWO
Buy UK seasonal food - saves you oodles of CO2 and money - as does not wasting food. Stands to reason really, buying locally supports UK farmers (who do a fantastic job of looking after our cattle, crops, countryside and wildlife), and the food hasn’t travelled for miles before you buy it. And as far as waste goes, why spend hard-earned money on food and then let it be thrown away. Only buy what you need (Sounds like common sense but how many of us are guilty of throwing food away)
Buying locally also reduces packaging (that has been factored into the cost of the stuff you are buying!), therefore this saves you money too - less packaging - cheaper to buy. Packaging is also a nightmare for landfill sites (more on that next time!)
THREE
I think if we had a big ‘clock-like’meter in our living room that had a second hand on it, whizzing round showing us how much energy we were using with all the lights on and heating turned up too high (because we don’t want to put a woolly on!) we may be terrified into changing our energy habits!
The problem is that we just pay our bills each month and don’t really think about how much that light on is costing us (and all that CO2 of course). One simple and easy way to save money is to turn off lights in empty rooms (I know - sounds logical, but how many of us keep them on?! - It is that “I‘ll just keep the light on in the kitchen for when I go back, in another hour, to make a cup of tea“ thing that we all do. If you don‘t, well done!!)
We will be having more ‘Hints and Tips’ to save money and CO2 each month. What is your footprint? Let us know your story and you can win Dr Gillian McKeiths Shopping Guide - that will help you buy just what you need and no waste! Now that’s what I call a win-win!
Wishng you love and health
Susie
