Locally Grown
What Is Local Food?
July 29 2008
In an ideal world communities should be able to buy a large proprtion of their food locally, but buying local food is not just about food miles. The food should be produced and distributed in ways that contribute positively to local communities. It should respect the people, the animals and the environment. It should also be self-sustaining.
I came across a fine example of this recently, when I met the guys from The Trent Valley Vegetable Company in Nottingham. They only travel 30 miles with their produce and so you can be sure that it is very local!
Will tells me that although they are not organically certified, all of their produce is grown without using pesticides.
I have eaten their produce unknowingly, as they supply a local farm shop and so I can guarantee that the veggies are delicious! They are quite unusual in that they never buy any produce to sell on, and so there is the extra guarantee of it being 100% local
Trent Valley Vegetable Company supply Spring Lane Farm Shop and Gonalston Farm Shop. They can also be seen at farmers Markets in Mansfield (with more to come). Will and his brother Matt are keen to expand the business and have some exciting new ideas.
SUSU Organic is co-organising an organic and local breakfast with the Trent Valley Vegetable Company and Spring Lane Farm Shop at Floralands Garden Centre during the Soil Association Organic Fortnight in September (more information on this when all dates have been confirmed).
