Keep Bees (and Save The Planet?)
November 06 2008
Einstein gave our beautiful planet only four years of survival if we did not have any bees, and with the world’s population of bees in such decline, maybe we could all help to turn the tide of a honey-free world
Anyone can keep bees and, they say, it is very rewarding. I would be too afraid of the stings, but even the less brave of us can help, by planting nectar-rich plants in our garden – for our neighbour’s bees to feast on!! These include willow, comfrey, michaelmas daisies, cotoneaster and hypericum.
For the brave ones, you need to do your research. Bee keeping is an apprenticeship – you need to be in there for the long haul, and it takes commitment. The bee-keeping season lasts from March to September and the bees must be inspected once every ten days.
